Understanding Symptoms and Situations of Dementia

Date:
Thursday, April 20, 2023
Time:
2 PM ET
Duration:
1 hour

Your care partners need to better understand why people living with dementia may sometimes say or do things that are unexpected and challenging. To be the most effective collaborator in care, your entire staff needs the specialized skills to navigate these situations at every point of contact. Combined with the fact that most dementia cases go undiagnosed, the need extends past the memory care unit.

This webinar with leading dementia care expert Teepa Snow will illustrate the many changes that occur in the brain during the progression of the disease and emphasize the role that the reactions and responses of every member of your staff play in interactions with those living with dementia. By the end, learners will understand how to develop better communication skills by emphasizing the value of empathetic and supportive communication through effective verbal and physical skills.

Learning objectives:

  • Learn key differences between typical and atypical aging.
  • Understand changes in the brain during dementia that result in typical changes in behavior and function.
  • Describe common behaviors that are symptoms of dementia in memory, understanding, language use, movement and sensation, and impulse control.
  • Identify effective versus typical caregiver responses to common behaviors.
